What's goin on y'all! Aight, so if you're with me on Facebook/Twitter (@_StephenSpencer)you've probably seen some of these already; but maybe not all of'm. I recently had the opportunity to work with Jersey based rapper, J Star. He's a good friend of the person who got me into music. It took forever and a week, but we finally were able to get the time to collaborate on some solid Hip-Hop! I started on an instrumental that turned into the following:

Soon after recording the song and releasing the this video, The FAM Records/ J Star camp followed up with this promotional video, to get the energy buzzing for the single. They did their thing!

Now with all that being said, here is the finished product! Recorded, Mixed, and best of all? AVAILABLE FOR DOWNLOAD! Much respect to J Star and his whole family/team over there. Rumor has it they'll be making this his single and making an official music video soon so keep an eye out. Play/Download/Enjoy!

The Other Side

In hindsight, the title of this song is kind of ironic. I'm always releasing music that I make, producingly (yeah I make my own words up. Don't judge me). This is the first time I'm showing y'all a finished product from the other side (riiight?), the songwriter side of things!

Super excited for a bunch of reasons- new opportunities, new music made, new lyrics written, mad stuff. I wanted to show you guys how I write. Reading the lyrics is one thing. But to actually hear it, finished... gives solid understanding of how the writer wanted it portrayed.

That being said, I give you a song I wrote, titled The Other Side, performed by, the ever so talented, Ms. Terry Lovette (@OOOSHECUNT). Feel free to follow a brother (@_StephenSpencer)! Any questions? Holla at me wherever you find it easiest to reach me.

Bittersweeeeet!

'Evening Y'all. Hope all is well. As some of you know, Sharmelle Hunte and I were scheduled to be guests on Shovio.com's "87 Blocks From the Apollo" online radio show, yesterday at 7pm (if you tuned in, thank you SO much. They had more viewers that normal, I heard. You are appreciated). Due to a collision that took place... approaching the GWB... DURING RUSH HOUR (REALLY?), we weren't able to make it to the station in time.

The show went on as it must and turned out fine. They played our music, really gave us a good word, and we got positive feedback from all angles. If you missed it, like we did, here is the link to the video of the show. Its roughly a half hour clip and we start getting mentioned around 20:22.

Big thank you to Ysmael and Jorge for their support and kind words, as well as the positivity they gave on the music after the show. Y'all are ill for that!

Good Day!!

Yo Yo! Hope all is well with y'all. Yesterday was a pretty dope day! I had my people swing through for the day just to kick it. Kickin it, in the studio, turned into them gettin the idea to do some cover songs of some of their favorite joints (inspiration is never hard to find in a studio, haha).

So they (Sha (@SHazzyLove) and Terry Lovette (@OOOSHECUNT)) got their vocals on, and I (@SSPhD) picked up the instruments, and we went at it! Beautiful time rockin out with'm. Shout out to my homeboy, Bassell who came through out of nowhere n got on the Trumpet and Josh P. who was kind enough to lend a lil rainstick action, lol. Love my people.

Here's a cover of Tweet's "Smoking Cigarettes" that Sharmelle and I did.

This is the cover of Floetry's "Feelings" that we did featuring Terry Lovette.

Hope y'all enjoyed! Your support for them and I doesn't go unnoticed and is GREATLY appreciated.

Who Knows What You Might Try Mathematics

Whats goin on ppl?

Hope all is well with y'all. Recently I reached my 500th tweet on Twitter (@SSPhD). For things like that, when I catch/ remember'm, I like to do little things as sort of a mini celebration. I'm always lookin' for reasons to celebrate, haha. Sometimes its just a link to something new or a shameless blog plug, but I wanted to accctually do something for this one. So, I created a Mathematics video for my newest instrumental!

It's titled "Who Knows What You Might Try". Kinda hard to tell by what is shown, but it was designed as more of a sexy time track. However, there are smooth elements to go along with some sweeping transitions and a guitar lick for the hook. Hope y'all enjoy it! As always, be sure to tell a friend or post this where you see fit. The unsigned hustle isn't complete until someone has heard it, enjoyed it and passed it on. So, if you enjoy, please do help with the hustle. Your ears and support are more appreciated than I can ever tweet/ blog about. 'Nough said. Have a listen!

Can't Wait to Wake Up to You

Mornin' Y'all! So if you know me, you probably know me as more of a producer. Its my passion and I love it more than anything (not counting obvious loves). A lot of people don't know that I write songs, too. I love it equally as much and do it as much as I produce. It's just not as easy to show lyrics.

So, I decided to post lyrics up here every now and then! It only makes sense, if I'm gon' have instrumentals up here, to at least post some written material. I'll most likely give the title, lil background on it, and a verse. Cool? Cool.

This excerpt is from a joint I wrote a lil' while ago, titled "Can't Wait to Wake Up to You". I won't really explain too much about these lyrics b/c this song explains itself.

Verse 1:

When I lay down, every night

Each dream is new

And yet all my dreams still

Revolve around you

Only thing better

than these beautiful dreams of you

is waking up to you

to see these dreams come true

What I have with you is

Straight from story

And where I last left off,

You were by my side

I can get lost in my thoughts but

Just for a moment

Because the real fairytale is right outside

Hope you enjoyed!
(Yup, there's a beat for this one)

WAPP.

YO! I wanted to put up an instrumental here to show what some of my Hip-Hop sounds like. A lot of you have heard the slower r&b music (Thank y'all SO much for the support on the joint with Sharmelle). Maybe you've been to the myspace (/stephenspencer) and heard music there.

The thing about the myspace music is, for the longest, I've literally been having meetings with some of my closest friends, just to decide what music should go up on there.

(When you put complete songs on the internet, people can steal it, easy! So my friends would decide what songs were considered "good enough" but not the "Cream of the crop" in their opinions. That way, if someone stole it, it wouldn't be the worst thing in the world.)

But, I called my good friend, Zach Alias (I swear I only know a few Zach's lol), over to see what he felt was a hella dope track, straight up, so i could put that on here.

Here's what he selected. All feedback is good feedback. Hope you enjoy!

OK! Now to the music!

My Homegirl, Sharmelle. You meet her and her personality speaks for her. You know she sings before she sings, you know she's cool before she speaks. We talked about doing a project together and were slow to start it. Once we did, it was the fastest, most effortless process, and we came up with this...

I'ma quote some Outkast to describe her voice. "...Smooth as a hotcomb on nappy ass hair."

Stats:
Verses written by Sharmelle
All singing by Sharmelle
Instrumental by Stephen Spencer
Hook written by Stephen Spencer

(Snapple fact: This is her first solo song. Que?!)

Tell your people and their people. Enjoy!

What's in a name

Aight, so the blog is "Stephen Spencer, PhD." The PhD is sort of a combination of a nickname that I got, and the way I/ a couple of my folk view our love for music.

"PH" is a nickname I got from my homeboy, Zach Lawrence, from college, because I spell my name like "StePHen". Clever, right?? Lol, not really, but I like it and it stuck (Yes, if you call me PH, I will def respond).

Putting a D at the end of it is meant to look like a Doctorate type deal. A couple of my ppl and I see ourselves as biggg music nerds. Nerds>good grades>thooooose degrees! Aaaight? If there was question on it, I hope that cleared it up. Not sure if I'ma start going by "Stephen Spencer, PhD" yet or not. Kind of a dope concept... Time will tell. If you have my info, gimme your opinion on it! Much appreciated!

What Uuup!

What's goin on peoples? I gotta admit, I'm not much for blogging, but I do think there's a dope advantage to having one place where updates can be kept for someone's most recent events and successes. So with that, this blog is born!

I won't be venting or sharing any personal feelings, here. However, I will be putting up projects that I've either produced or written lyrics for as they come up. Hope you enjoy the ride! It's a crazy hustle and its MAD fun to be a part of.
